Free printable family tree charts: blank pedigree charts, a fan chart and a family group sheet

Four blank forms to print and fill in by hand, free, as many times as you like: a four-generation pedigree chart, a five-generation pedigree chart, a fan chart and a family group sheet. Each comes as a PDF in US Letter and A4. You don't need to sign up or give an email address, and the only branding on them is a two-line footer naming Draw My Tree.

If your family is already in a tree or a GEDCOM file, Draw My Tree prints each of these charts filled in, and reprints them after every correction.

Blank pedigree chart

A pedigree chart follows one person's direct ancestors: their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, fifteen people on one page, printed across the sheet.

  • Number 1 is the person the chart is about, often yourself.
  • A father is twice his child's number and a mother twice plus one, so 2 and 3 are the parents of 1, and 8 to 15 are the great-grandparents. Every number names one ancestor.
  • The first two generations ask for dates and places of birth, marriage and death. The grandparents' boxes ask for the birth place and the dates of marriage and death. The great-grandparents have less room, so their boxes ask for birth and death only, and a Cont. on chart line for the chart that carries their parents.
  • When you start a second chart for a great-grandparent's line, write on it which number they were on the first: No. 1 on this chart is the same as no. 8 on chart no. 1. That links a stack of four-generation charts into one long pedigree.

Blank five-generation pedigree chart

The same chart one generation further back: thirty-one people, up to your great-great-grandparents, numbered 1 to 31 the same way. The sixteen boxes in the last column have room for a name, the years of birth and death, and the chart that carries their parents. It is the form most genealogy societies hand out first, because one sheet holds as far back as most families can name from memory.

Blank family group sheet

A family group sheet is one page about one family: a couple and their children.

  • Husband and wife: birth, christening, death and burial, each with a date and a place, then their parents' names and any other spouses. Write the wife under the surname she was born with.
  • Marriage: the date and place.
  • Children: eight rows, eldest first, each with their birth, death and the person they married.
  • Notes and sources: where each fact came from, so you or a cousin can check it later.

Blank fan chart

A fan chart holds the same five generations as the pedigree chart above, drawn as a half circle: you at the centre, then a ring for the parents, the grandparents, the great-grandparents and the great-great-grandparents.

  • Your father's side is on the left and your mother's on the right, so each half of the fan is one side of the family.
  • The cells carry the pedigree chart's numbers, 2 to 31, so you can copy names across from a pedigree chart without working out where each one goes.
  • Write along the cell, from the inner edge outward, in the outer two rings, where the cells are narrow. The inner rings have room to write across.

Tips for filling them in

  • Write dates as day, month in letters, then the full year: 12 Mar 1871. "3/4/1871" means March in one country and April in another.
  • Write places smallest first: town, county, state or province, country, as they were named at the time.
  • Mark guesses as guesses: "abt. 1850", "bef. 1900", "prob." A blank is better than a wrong date someone copies later.
  • Use pencil until a fact has a source.

Rather not fill them in by hand?

Draw My Tree makes every one of these from your tree, filled in: a numbered pedigree chart of two to seven generations, a fan chart of up to six generations of ancestors, and a family group sheet for any couple. Each chart exports as a PDF at any size, from a letter sheet to a poster, and the family group sheet prints as pages from the print dialog, which can also save a PDF. Each carries your latest corrections every time you print it.

If your family is already in Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilySearch, Family Tree Maker or RootsMagic, export a GEDCOM file and import it. Import a GEDCOM explains how to get the file out of each app.

Try it as a guest: no account is needed for up to 50 people.
