Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Draw My Tree ("we", "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use Draw My Tree (the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to the practices described here.

Who we are

Draw My Tree is operated by Prescott Bros LLC. For any privacy question or request, contact us at contact@drawmytree.com.

Information we collect

  • Account information. When you create an account, our authentication provider (Clerk) collects your name, email address, and the credentials or third-party sign-in (such as Google) you choose. We receive your account identifier and profile details from Clerk.
  • Family tree content. The people, relationships, dates, places, events, stories, and tags you add to your trees. This content frequently includes personal information about other individuals; see Information about other people.
  • Uploaded media. Photos, portraits, documents, and other files you upload, along with any titles, captions, and source notes you attach to them.
  • Payment information. When you buy the Family Plan or a Keepsake Export, payments are processed by Polar, which acts as the merchant of record for the sale. We never receive or store your full card number; Polar shares limited details with us such as your plan or subscription status and billing country.
  • Technical and usage data. Standard server and device data such as IP address, browser type, and the actions you take in the app, used to operate and secure the Service. Product analytics are deliberately narrow: we record that an action happened and counts or category labels about it, never the names, dates, places, stories, files, or any other content of your trees. Nothing is stored on your device for analytics and no analytics cookie is set, so there is nothing here to consent to or opt out of.

Guest trees you create without an account are stored locally in your browser and are not sent to our servers until you sign up and choose to save them.

How we use information

We use the information above to:

  • provide, maintain, and improve the Service;
  • authenticate you and keep your account secure;
  • store, render, import, and export your trees and media;
  • process payments and prevent fraudulent or abusive use;
  • respond to your requests and send service-related messages.

We do not sell your personal information.

We use cookies and browser storage that are necessary to run the Service. See our Cookie Policy for details.

Where your data is stored and who processes it

We rely on the following processors to run the Service. Each handles only the data needed for its function:

  • Clerk: authentication and account management.
  • Polar: billing, payments, and sales-tax handling as our merchant of record.
  • Google Cloud (Google LLC): application hosting (Cloud Run) and storage of uploaded media (Cloud Storage), in the United States.
  • Neon: the managed Postgres database that holds your tree data, in the United States.
  • Cloudflare: content delivery, DNS, the edge that fronts the app and the API, and cookieless visit counts on our public pages (the landing, pricing, and documentation pages only, never the app or a shared tree).
  • PostHog: product analytics, in the United States. It receives the counts and route shapes described under Technical and usage data above, proxied through our own domain, and no tree content.

Your data may be processed in the countries where these providers operate.

Information about other people

Family trees contain information about relatives and other individuals, some of whom may be living. You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to add information about other people and for complying with applicable laws.

Because this information is collected from the tree's owner rather than from the person it describes, we may not be able to notify each individual directly; this policy, together with the controls below, is how we provide that information.

For the content you add to your trees, including information about other people, you decide what to record and with whom to share it, and we provide and control the systems that store, render, and share it. You are responsible for having the right to include other people's information and for responding to their requests about content you created; we are responsible for securing it, for the transparency this policy provides, and for operating the redaction and removal controls below. You can raise a request about your own or another person's information with us — contact us at contact@drawmytree.com and we will work with the relevant account owner.

Sensitive information about other people

Family history can reveal sensitive details — health or cause of death, racial or ethnic origin, or religious belief. When you add this kind of information about a living person, you are responsible for having the right to record it — for example, their consent, or the fact that they have already made it public — and you should not add sensitive information about living people you have no right to record. The public-link redaction described below is designed to keep living people out of anything you publish, and you can hide, correct, or remove any person at any time.

When you enable a public link for a tree, people who appear to be living (no recorded death, burial, or place of either, and a birth year — their own, their baptism's, or one inferred from their dated descendants — inside the last hundred years or missing entirely) are hidden by default (shown only as "Private," with their dates, places, stories, media, and the marriage/divorce years and photos on their relationships withheld) so a public link does not expose living third parties. A tree owner can override this per person — marking someone as living or deceased, or choosing to always show or always hide them on public links.

If you are an individual whose information appears in a shared tree, you can object to your inclusion or ask to have your information hidden or corrected directly from the shared link using the "Are you in this tree?" option, or by contacting us at contact@drawmytree.com. We record the request and route it to the account owner, who can hide or correct your details; we will work with the owner to address it.

Data retention

We keep your account and tree data for as long as your account is active. When you delete content, a tree, or your account, we remove the associated data from active systems within 30 days, excluding backups that expire on their normal schedule and records we must keep for legal or accounting reasons.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can edit and delete trees and media at any time inside the app, and export your data from the export tools. To make any other request, contact us at contact@drawmytree.com.

If you are a resident of a U.S. state with a comprehensive consumer-privacy law, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or obtain a portable copy of your personal information, and to appeal our decision on a request. You can access, correct, delete, and export your information yourself in the app, or contact us at contact@drawmytree.com. We do not sell your personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not use it for targeted advertising.

Children's privacy

The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
