Versions of a tree

One family can be drawn many ways: the whole tree for the wall, a fan of your mother's ancestors for her birthday, a timeline for the cousins, only your father's line for the reunion. A version keeps one of those ways under a name, so you can go back to it, share it on its own link, and print it again without setting it up twice.

The people belong to the tree, not to a version. Fix a date or add a photo in any version and every version shows it.

What a version keeps

  • The look and the chart: everything in Look, the layout included, so a version can be a fan chart while another is a timeline.
  • Who is shown: everything in Filter: the Focus on a person choice (one person's ancestors, descendants, the people near them or the path between two people), the family, and Hide living people.
  • Collapsed branches: every branch you folded with Collapse branch, so a version can leave a side of the family closed. Its link shows them folded too.
  • Who a chart centres on: the person at the middle of a fan or the start of a pedigree.
  • The print setup: the format, paper size and the other choices in Export.

Your own preferences for this screen (the size of the app's text, the panel width, Simplify when zoomed out and the overview minimap) are not part of a version, and neither is where you've zoomed or panned: a version opens with its whole chart in view.

Switching and saving

The version on screen is named beside the tree's name. Open it to see every version and switch between them; the address in your browser names the version, so a bookmark opens it again.

When what's on screen differs from the version you opened (its look, who is shown, its collapsed branches, who a fan or pedigree centres on, or the print setup it keeps), a dot appears beside its name. Open the menu and choose Save changes to the version, or Save as a new version… to keep it under a new name. Save in Look saves only the look to the version on screen; who is shown, the collapsed branches, the chart's centre and the print setup are saved from this menu. If you switch away with changes you haven't saved, you're asked whether to save them first.

From the same menu you can Rename a version, Duplicate it as a starting point for another, Make default and Delete it. The default version is the one the tree opens on and the one Your trees shows.

Sharing a version

Each version has its own public link. In Share, choose the version under Version to share and turn its link on. Turning it off pauses the link and turning it on again brings the same link back; Rotate gives it a new address. A version's link shows that version's look and chart, and only the people that version shows: a link to your mother's side carries no one from your father's side, not even hidden in the page. Living people are hidden on every link unless you turn that off for it, as on any public link.

Deleting a version turns its link off for good. Anyone who opens it afterwards is told the link is no longer available.

Who can do what

  • Owners can do everything above.
  • Editors can switch, save, rename, duplicate, make default and make new versions, a version with its link on included. Everyone with that link sees the change, and the link still hides who it always hides: living people while Hide living people is on, and anyone set to "Always hide". Who a link shows (its version's focus and family filter) and deleting a version with its link on, which takes the link down, are for whoever may publish: the owner, or an editor while Editors can publish is on in Share. Any other editor can still try another filter on that version, to see the whole tree for a moment; the Filter panel says the filter is theirs alone, offers Back to the saved filter, and saving the version keeps its look and setup but not that filter (see Who can do what on a shared tree).
  • Viewers can switch between versions but not save them.

Editions

The Family Plan also cuts a dated, read-only edition of each tree you own, once a year, on the anniversary of your plan (or when a gifted year ends). It is named for the year, such as "Edition 2027", and keeps the tree as it stood that day: its people, stories, events and look. A year gets one edition per tree.

You get a notice in the bell when an edition is saved, and it opens the edition. Everyone who can open the tree can open its editions, but nobody can change one.

An edition keeps your photos only as long as they are in the tree. A photo you delete later is gone from the editions too.

Editions belong to the tree. When a tree goes to Trash, its editions go with it, and they come back when you restore the tree.

Versions and your plan

Every tree has one version, its default, on any account. Keeping more than one, and a link for each, comes with the Family Plan. A Keepsake stays as it is: one tree, drawn one way at a time, with its read-only link, for as long as the tree exists.

If the Family Plan ends, your versions and their links stay. The default version can still be changed as before; the others are kept read-only until you subscribe again, and you can delete any of them at any time. The default itself can't be deleted while other versions remain, since that would make another version the default, which comes with the plan.
